Secant Pile Walls

Can be successfully installed in virtually any ground conditions

Maline Creek  |  St. Louis, MO

The Maline Creek CSO Storage Facility was part of Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s mega-CSO program, Project Clear. We were contracted to construct two well-formed and water-tight secant pile structures that provided temporary earth support and groundwater cutoff for a large shaft and a large support-of-excavation box.

Atoka Pipeline  |  Ada, OK

The replacement of an existing water line with a new one to increase the amount of water that can be transmitted from the Atoka Reservoir in Southeast Oklahoma to the Stanley Draper Reservoir near Oklahoma City involved the construction of two launching shafts to facilitate micro-tunneling. We were contracted to install the support of excavation systems for these two launching shafts using unreinforced secant pile rings.

What are secant pile walls?

Secant pile walls are created by drilling or augering a series of overlapping concrete piles reinforced with steel beams or rebar to form a wall. After the initial piles are installed and gain sufficient strength, the secondary piles are installed in between the initial piles to create a continuous and impervious wall.

How do they work?

Depending on the project requirements, a secant wall may be designed as a cantilever structure, or supported by struts or ground anchors installed through the wall during excavation.

Why do you need secant pile walls?

Secant pile walls can be successfully installed in virtually any ground conditions, including grounds that are typically difficult to work with. Secant pile walls are ideal for urban construction projects, as they can easily be installed in tight spaces and are more flexible in shape than diaphragm walls.
